Do and Don't in Investing - Re-Visit!

Do and Don't in Investing

Some ideas from Cho Yan Chiu, Director of Hong Kong Economics Journal.

Learn from these animal when investing in the stock market.

To be aggressive as wolves and don't behave like sheep

Those who are aggressive as wolves can make lots of money whereas those are as meek as sheep only stand to lose. Sheep have limited visibility as they can only see three feet ahead. Wolves can stand at the mountain top and look down the mountain so they can see further.

Wolves are also loners and sheep are in pack.

This is the wolf's mentality. When wolves go for the kill, they attack with speed. They act swiftly when it comes to reaping the rewards.
All the entrepreneurs who are to make profits have wolf-like personalities.

Be a shark is ideal

However, being like a wolf does not guarantee success. It would be ideal if you could position yourself like a shark. A shark can go without food for three weeks. When it spotted its target it can surge forward at the fastest speed and kills it with one bite.

Don't be Rabbit

First, happy Lunar Rabbit Year to you. Since it is the Year of Rabbit, but it doesn't mean that you have to invest like a Rabbit. If you behave like rabbit, it will be hard for you to make big money from the stock market.

Don't be like a rabbit. When a rabbit chews on its carrot; it would look at it, put it down and repeat the cycle continuously. A rabbit always take small bites. It is just like small retail investors earn small and quick profits. But, eventually, they would be devoured by BBs who are like eagles.

Be predators

Predators are like wolves, eagles and sharks and they always go for the kill. Their attacks are deadly. So good investors must be vicious, must be able to bear with certain situations and must have accurate foresight.

Predators have great patience. Yes. You too need to be patient when it is disadvantage to you. Accurate predictions and vicious attacks are also essential. You can only succeed when you have these three attributes.

Bull's Eye Technique

No matter what industry is, you need to spot the leading stocks in that industry. You will only reap the rewards in the leading stocks and not the secondary stocks. Those small companies are lacking in competition so you need to buy the best stocks to win big.

DOW: 15,112.19 Down 225.47(1.47%)

NEW YORK: US stocks tumbled on Thursday after Dow components Cisco and Walmart spotlighted the weak economic outlook in their earnings reports.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 225.47 points (1.47 percent) to 15,112.19.
The broad-based S&P 500 gave up 24.07 points (1.43 percent) at 1,661.32, while the tech-rich Nasdaq Composite Index lost 63.16 points (1.72 percent) at 3,606.12.

Shares of information technology giant Cisco lost 7.2 percent after it reported a "softening" outlook in emerging economies and announced it would cut 4,000 jobs.

Walmart meanwhile released disappointing earnings and slashed its 2013 forecast citing weak consumer spending in the US and foreign markets. That sent it shares tumbling 2.6 percent.
At the same time, a strong improvement in weekly unemployment insurance claims suggested a tightening of the jobs market, adding to expectations that the Federal Reserve will beging tapering its bond-buying stimulus program soon.

Dan Greenhaus, chief global strategist at BTIG, said Thursday's data "led people to increase their odds of the Fed reducing purchases in September," prompting a rise in bond yields that unnerved equity markets.

Other tech companies followed Cisco lower, including Microsoft (-1.7 percent), Hewlett-Packard (-4.5 percent) and Yahoo (-3.2 percent).

Another tech-sector Dow component, Intel, fell 2.4 percent after RW Baird downgraded the company. The Baird note cited Intel's heavy leverage to the declining personal computer market, among other factors, according to Barron's.

Walmart, the world's largest retailer, lost 2.6 percent on the day. Fellow retailer and Dow component Home Depot fell 3.0 percent.

Kohl's, another retailer, rose 5.3 percent after reporting earnings of $1.04 per share, one penny shy of expectations. The company also trimmed its full-year profit forecast.
Cosmetic giant Estee Lauder jumped 3.4 percent after reporting earnings of $94 million, 84 percent above last-year's level. Full-year and quarterly profits also bested analyst expectations, in part due to strong results in its skin-care products.

Bond prices fell. The yield on the 10-year US Treasury rose to 2.76 percent from 2.71 percent after getting as high as 2.82 percent, while the 30-year increased to 3.79 percent from 3.75 percent. Bond prices and yields move inversely.

Fight your biggest worry: Inflation!!!

Consumers in S’pore most worried about inflation: Poll

INFLATION is a major cause of anxiety among consumers in Singapore, according to a survey.

It found that 65 per cent of those polled listed rising costs as their chief concern, well ahead of levels in other regional countries.

Inflation was cited as a chief worry by 55 per cent in Thailand, 51 per cent in China and only 39 per cent in Indonesia, said research firm GfK.

Singapore consumers were particularly worried about the price of health care, with "significant levels of concern" among 42 per cent of those polled.

Dow Jones industrial average (^DJI) ended down 113.35 points

NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. stocks fell on Wednesday, with the Dow industrials posting the worst day since late June, as investors speculated when the Federal Reserve might begin to reduce its ultra-loose monetary policy, which has helped propel stocks to record highs.

Trading volume has been low as the earnings season winds down and economic indicators present a mixed view, complicating predictions of the Fed's next policy action. The Fed has been buying $85 billion in bonds each month to keep interest rates low. Some analysts expect the Fed to start tapering bond purchases as early as September if data shows the economy is improving.

Wednesday's decline accelerated in the final hour of trading after a top Fed official said the U.S. central bank, which meets again in September, should have more evidence about the economy and inflation before it can make a decision.

"There is a growing consensus that individual data points don't really matter at this point and that the Fed has made up its mind to have completed the bond purchases by the middle of next year," said Andrew Wilkinson, chief economic strategist at Miller Tabak & Co in New York.

The Dow Jones industrial average (^DJI) ended down 113.35 points, or 0.73 percent, at 15,337.66. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index (^GSPC) was down 8.77 points, or 0.52 percent, at 1,685.39. The Nasdaq Composite Index (^IXIC) fell 15.17 points, or 0.41 percent, at 3,669.27.

The S&P 500, which has fallen six out of the past eight sessions, is down about 0.4 percent so far this week but for the year is up 18 percent.

St. Louis Federal Reserve President James Bullard said the central bank needs to gather more evidence that the economy is improving and inflation heading higher before deciding to taper its bond buying.

In economic news, U.S. producer prices were flat in July, below expectations for a 0.3 percent increase.

As the death toll in Egypt worsened, the Market Vectors Egypt Index ETF (EGPT) fell 3.3 percent to $44.61. The country's interim vice president resigned and a state of emergency was imposed following political clashes in the country.

Volume was roughly 5.4 billion shares traded on the New York Stock Exchange, the Nasdaq and the NYSE MKT, below the average daily closing volume of about 6.4 billion this year.

Read? For the truly wealthy, it's not about big salaries

The results show a stark contrast between the 1 percent and the rest. The population as a whole earns 64 percent of its expanded cash income from so-called "compensation," basically a paycheck from a company.

But the top 1 percent earns only 39 percent from compensation. It gets 24 percent from business income and 29 percent from investments.

The top 0.1 percent is even more reliant on investments, with 35 percent of their income from investments.

In other words, the richer you are, the more likely you'll make your money from investing or owning a business.

As Jared Bernstein of the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities points out, "Once you get up to the very top of the income scale ... you've got two-thirds of their income coming from nonlabor sources."

As retail investors in current interest rate environment, how are you coping with your marshmallow test everyday?

1. Eat the marshmallow right away.

2. Wait to eat the marshmallow, while the researcher stepped out of the room. When the researcher returned, the child could then have a second marshmallow. Eating the first marshmallow, before the researcher returned, would automatically forfeit the second.

As you can imagine, most kids had trouble with this one. The video footage of the study is telling… kids closing their eyes… others intently staring at the marshmallow… some pretending it wasn’t there… yet others would play hide and seek with the desk to distract themselves until the researcher returned. Around seventy percent of the children could not resist temptation and never got their second marshmallow. The remaining thirty percent somehow found a way to resist.

Uncle8888: Return of Ford The King!!!

Forget housing data, GDP, mortgage applications and every other wonk data point thrust upon you by the breathless media. The most under-reported story of the last five years is the humble Ford Motor Company (F).

In November 2008 Ford was flat on its back and beaten senselessly by too much leverage and no demand. Shares were trading at a humiliating $1.43. For the full year Ford lost an almost incomprehensible $14.7 billion.

While General Motors (GM) and Chrysler were getting bailed out to the tune of $25 billion, Ford was going it alone. Almost. They did take a $5 billion loan in exchange for agreeing to fast track green initiatives but that simply kept them on even competitive footing.

From this humbling low Ford was slowly rebuilt. The company was streamlined and new products were introduced. Despite the age of the current fleet of cars on the road being as high as it's ever been, Ford's revenues have recovered.

Despite weakness in Europe and a rapid decline in the Chinese economy the company has reversed its losses, paid its debts and regained its mojo in an unquantifiable way. This 2012 Stock of the Year has gained more than 800% from its lows, nearly doubled in the last 52-weeks, and gained nearly 30% in 2013.

Last week Ford reported its best July sales figures since 2006, posting 11% year-over-year gains. Todd Schoenberger of Landcolt Trading says shares have more room to run. "Americans are buying cars again and what cars are they buying? They're buying Ford," Schoenberger says in the attached clip.

Any stock on this type of run is due for a pause but Ford has earned the right to rest and refuel.

Domestic annual sales are at pre-crisis highs and the company is firing on a lot of, if not all cylinders.

Sometimes companies are about more than just a ticker. Every once in a while investors just have to sit back and admire a great story.

Read? Three new ways to get rich

Three keys to building wealth

1. Think first about risk and then about return

Curtis says: “Focus on risk first. Get your risk budget down. Know how much risk you can take and then it’s time to think about return. If we do it the other way around, we’re human beings and we’re all going to get a little greedy. The first thing you know, we’re going to be way out there on the risk spectrum. When the markets turn, we’re going to get hurt really badly. That’s the key: Start with risk, and then go to return.”

2. Diversify investments

Curtis says: “The basic principle of diversification is that we’re not as smart as we think we are. Things are going to come out of the blue and hit us when we don’t need it. Diversify as broadly as you’re comfortable doing it. Theoretically, you should own practically every investible asset in the world. Most of us are not going to get there, but don’t just stick to US stocks and bonds like so many people do. It’s been a great place to be recently – in US stocks, anyway – but it’s not always the best place to be. You’ve got to diversify more broadly than that because just cannot perceive the future.”

Uncle8888 says: It is more than just simple diverification.

3. Always be alert for great opportunities

Curtis says: “Most of those opportunities I found over time don’t just come from market events themselves. They tend to come from the reactions of other investors who are getting way too greedy pumping markets up or they’re getting way too fearful and bailing out of markets. They create terrific opportunities. You’ve got to sit and wait for those opportunities to come. You’ve got to be patient. But, when they’re there, you’ve got to be willing to take advantage of them.”

Biosensors Q1 net down 63%

MEDICAL device manufacturer Biosensors Group International announced a 63 per cent fall in net profit to US$12.1 million (S$15.3 million) for its first quarter ended June 30.

Lower profit was due to a combination of lower revenue, higher cost of sales and higher sales and marketing expenses.

Revenue was down 11 per cent to US$76.7 million.

The group is guiding for revenue for the fiscal year ending Mar 31, 2014, to grow by 15 per cent, driven by growth for drug-eluting stent sales and an expectation that China sales will recover.

Noble's profit drops 68%

COMMODITY trading firms continued on their weak showing this quarter with Noble Group's earnings falling 68 per cent.

The largest commodity trader by revenue made net profit of US$62.8 million, down from US$194.8 million a year ago.

Revenue rose by 5 per cent from last year to US$25.3 billion.

But a larger increase in cost of sales and services, losses on supply chain assets and losses from associates eroded the bottomline.

Keppel celebrates 45 years

Just For Thinking ...

Keppel was listed as a shipyard on the Stock Exchange of Singapore in 1980 and its market capitalisation was $396 million. Today, its market capitalisation has grown to almost $19 billion.

CW8888: That is about 4,800% increase!!!

$10K ---> $480K

Are you one of those long-term retail investors still holding Kep Corp bought in 1980s?

The company's full year revenue and net profit have risen from about $723 million and $87 million in 1981 to $13.9 billion and $2.2 billion or $1.9 billion respectively (before revaluation, major impairment and divestments) in 2012.

Hyflux maintains earnings despite revenue drop

In spite of a 25 per cent drop in revenue, Hyflux maintained its earnings in the second quarter, helped by effective cost management.

Net profit attributable to shareholders grew one percent from the same period last year to $17.7 million.

Revenue stood at $138.3 million, down from $183.6 million a year ago.

The firm had a order book of $2.7 billion at the end of June 2013, and said at a results briefing that the industry was picking up after a few dry years.

Its Tuaspring Desalination Plant is also expected to be completed soon, with the official opening to take place in September.

Sembcorp Posts 1H2013 Net Profit of S$342.2 Million

Singapore, August 6, 2013 - Sembcorp Industries (Sembcorp) today reported a net profit of S$342.2 million and turnover of S$4.8 billion for the first half of 2013 (1H2013), compared to S$367.4 million and S$5.1 billion respectively in the corresponding period last year (1H2012). Sembcorp’s main profit contributors continued to be its Utilities and Marine businesses, which contributed 53% and 39% of Group net profit respectively.

The Utilities business achieved a 4% growth in net profit in 1H2013. The business’ 1H2013 net profit grew to S$201.3 million from S$193.7 million, mainly attributable to our recently-acquired power assets in China. The Marine business contributed S$147.7 million in net profit in 1H2013, a decrease of 5% compared to S$155.3 million in 1H2012 primarily due to lower interest income and lower contribution from associates. The Urban Development business recorded a net profit of S$10.3 million compared to S$12.3 million in 1H2012.

For 1H2013, return on equity (annualised) for the Group was 14.6% and earnings per share amounted to 19.2 cents. Economic value added was a positive S$275.0 million while cash and cash equivalents stood at S$2.1 billion.

In the second quarter of 2013 (2Q2013), Group net profit was S$165.4 million compared to S$190.7 million in 2Q2012, while turnover was S$2.5 billion compared to S$2.7 billion. The Utilities business recorded net profit of S$111.9 million for the quarter, while the Marine and Urban Development businesses posted net profit of S$75.7 million and S$3.6 million respectively.

Tang Kin Fei, Group President & CEO of Sembcorp Industries, said, “In 1H2013, our Utilities business continued to grow, underpinned by good performance from our overseas operations. We have a strong growth pipeline and have continued to make strides in strengthening our operational and technological capabilities. In Singapore and the UK, we embarked on new energy-from-waste projects, while in the Middle East we expanded our footprint with a joint venture to develop centralised utilities facilities in Duqm, Oman. In addition, to strengthen our capabilities in industrial wastewater treatment, we invested and entered into a strategic partnership with technology solutions firm, Biowater Technology. Meanwhile, our Marine business grew its orderbook to a strong S$14.4 billion, including S$3.5 billion worth of new contracts secured this year. Sembcorp, underpinned by our healthy pipeline of projects and orderbook, continues to be well-positioned to deliver sustainable long-term growth.”

FY2013 Outlook

Utilities

Underpinned by growing contribution from its overseas operations, the Utilities business is expected to deliver a steady performance in 2013 despite the impact of intensified competition in the Singapore gas and power market. In the second half of 2013, the initial public offering (IPO) of the Sembcorp Salalah Power and Water Company is also anticipated to take place.

Marine

Our Marine business has secured contract orders worth a total of S$3.5 billion (excluding repairs) since the start of the year, growing the Group’s net orderbook to S$14.4 billion, with completion and deliveries extending till 2019.

Demand for rigs is expected to remain strong, however, competition from the Chinese and Korean yards will impact margin. Despite the challenging shipping market environment, there is continued demand for ship repairs in niche segments.

The new yard at Tuas is commencing commercial operations in August 2013 and the construction of the Brazil yard is on track.

Urban Development

The Urban Development business is expected to deliver a steady operating performance in 2013.

Group

The Group, underpinned by sound business fundamentals and a healthy pipeline of projects and orderbook, continues to be well-positioned to deliver sustainable long-term growth.

Highlights from Sembcorp's 1H2013 Financial Results

Rowan refit: Tune-up for Rowan Gorilla VI jack-up

Singapore’s Keppel Offshore & Marine has lined up upgrade and repair contracts worth $78.83 million from Ensco, Saipem and Rowan Drilling.

In Singapore, Keppel FELS will upgrade Ensco’s semi-sumbersible ENSCO 500, which had been on contract with Brazil’s Petrobras.

The project is due to complete in the fourth quarter of 2013.

The Rotterdam-based yard is also carrying out a set of modifications and repairs on Saipem’s Scarabeo 5 semi-submersible, which is on a three-year contract with Statoil.

US stocks hit record highs

NEW YORK: US stocks rebounded from losses in late trade on Friday, setting record highs despite a weaker-than-expected US July jobs report.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 30.34 points (0.19 percent) at 15,658.36.

The broad-market S&P 500 advanced 2.80 points (0.16 percent) to 1,709.67.

Both the Dow and S&P set all-time closing records.

And the tech-rich Nasdaq Composite rose a solid 13.84 points (0.38 percent) to 3,689.59.
The Labor Department said the United States added 162,000 jobs in July, well below the 175,000 expected on average by analysts. The unemployment rate fell to 7.4 percent from 7.6 percent in June.

"The stock market started the day on a weak note after the disappointing July employment report, but was there ever a doubt that it would make a rebound try? We think not," Briefing.com said in a market note.

"The stock market has been conditioned to buy on the dips, because of the policy support provided by the Fed," the analysts said. They said it would be "tough" for the Federal Reserve to rationalize pulling back on its asset-buying program based on the July jobs report.

Embattled computer maker Dell soared 5.6 percent to $13.68, the most actively traded stock on the Nasdaq, after a sweetened offer from a Michael Dell-led consortium was accepted by a special Dell committee. The vote on the controversial go-private transaction was delayed for the third time.

Facebook jumped 1.5 percent to $38.05, above last year's $38 initial public offering, still riding a wave of investor enthusiasm after better-than-expected mobile advertising revenues. The stock hit an intraday peak of $38.49.

Dow member Chevron dipped 1.2 percent after earnings came in 19 cents shy of the $2.96 per share expected by analysts. Global oil and gas production fell to 2.58 million barrels a day from 2.62 million. Refinery division earnings also fell steeply.

Online professional networking firm LinkedIn soared 10.6 percent after profits rose 32 percent. The company also increased some of its full-year 2013 forecasts on financial performance.

Insurer AIG added 2.7 percent after announcing that earnings rose by 17 percent and that it would pay its first shareholder dividend since being rescued in the biggest government bailout during the financial crisis.

Bond prices surged. The yield on the 10-year US Treasury bond fell to 2.60 percent from 2.72 percent late Thursday, while the 30-year dropped to 3.69 percent from 3.77 percent. Bond prices and yields move inversely.

Market Timing and Luck
"Luck is the sense to recognise an opportunity and the ability to take advantage of it. Everyone has bad breaks, but everyone also has opportunities" - Samuel

"Of course luck comes into it - It's all part of the numbers game. What's important to be conscious of is, if you prepare the ground properly, do the best you can, and you pay attention to the detail, you give yourself the best chance and being blessed with that luck" - Adam

Peter Lynch, the former manager of Fidelity's Magellan Fund, once said that he felt that over half of the share holders in his fund had lost money, based on when they had bought and sold Magellan. This is a fund that has averaged over 18% a year for the last ten years, and over 22% a year during its lifetime (since 1963)!

What can we learn from Peter Lynch's above saying?

Not market timing; then what?

Keppel secures another jackup order worth US$206 million for Mexican market

It is the 66th KFELS B Class jackup rig ordered since 2000

Keppel FELS, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Keppel Offshore & Marine Ltd (Keppel O&M), has secured a contract to build a jackup rig for US$206million from Parden Holding, a company based in Uruguay.

Scheduled for delivery in 4Q 2015, the jackup rig is intended for operations in offshore Mexico. It will be built to Keppel's award winning KFELS B Class design and customised to Parden Holding's requirements. When completed, it will operate in water depths of up to 400 feet and drill to depths of 30,000 feet with accommodation for up to 150 persons.

This contract brings the total number of KFELS B Class jackup rigs ordered for the Mexican market since 2012 to 12.

Mr Wong Kok Seng, Managing Director (Offshore) of Keppel O&M and Managing Director of Keppel FELS said, "We are glad to be able to support Parden Holding with their very first high specification jackup rig as they aim to penetrate the offshore oil and gas market in Mexico. It is an affirmation of the KFELS B Class design and our strong shipyard capabilities. When completed in 2015, we would have 66 KFELS B Class rigs in the market."

The KFELS B Class design provides maximum uptime with reduced emissions and discharges. For its environmentally-friendly features, it was bestowed the prestigious Engineering Achievement Award from the Institution of Engineers Singapore in 2009. A key element of this design is Keppel's advanced high capacity rack and pinion jacking system, which enables this robust rig to jack up and down securely even in challenging environments.

Mr Panaretos Lagos, CEO of Parden Holding said, "Even with the number of new rigs being ordered, we continue to see strong demand for high specification jackup rigs in the Gulf of Mexico as the country looks to increase its production of oil and gas. Having a proven rig like the KFELS B jackup will enable us to seamlessly service the demands of the Mexican offshore drilling industry. In choosing Keppel FELS, we are confident of receiving a high quality rig on time, on budget, and with an excellent safety record."

Besides this order, Keppel FELS is also building another eight KFELS B Class rigs for the Mexican market.

The above contract is not expected to have a material impact on the net tangible assets or earnings per share of Keppel Corporation Limited for the current financial year.
