Powell comments fuel 1,000-point market rout Friday as stocks slide for a second week

Stocks plummeted Friday after Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell said in his Jackson Hole speech the central bank won’t back off in its fight against rapid inflation.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 1,008.38 points, or 3.03%, to 32,283.40, with losses accelerating into the close. The S&P 500 fell 3.37% to 4,057.66, and the Nasdaq Composite slid 3.94% to 12,141.71.

The major averages declined for a second week. The Dow tumbled 4.2%. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite lost roughly 4% and 4.4%, respectively.

Powell reiterated a tough stance against inflation, spurring investors to weigh the implications of higher interest rates kept in place for a longer time.

“Restoring price stability will likely require maintaining a restrictive policy stance for some time. The historical record cautions strongly against prematurely loosening policy,” Powell said.

“We do believe the Fed,” said Zach Hill, head of portfolio management at Horizon Investments. “We believe what they say that rates are going to be higher for longer and we’ve seen some repricing of the cuts in 2023. We think there’s more to go on that front and it’s likely to continue to fuel equity volatility from here.”

Dow slumps 600 points Monday to wrap worst day since June as summer rally fades

The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell sharply Monday, in its worst day since June, as the summer rally fizzled out and fears of aggressive interest rate hikes returned to Wall Street.

The Dow fell 643.13 points, or 1.91%, to 33,063.61. The S&P 500 dropped 2.14% to 4,137.99, and the Nasdaq Composite tumbled 2.55% to 12,381.57, respectively. It was the worst day of trading since June 16 for the Dow and the S&P 500.

Those losses come on the back of a losing week, which snapped a four-week winning streak for the S&P 500. Still, the broader market index remains about 13% above its June lows.

Investors are anticipating what could be a volatile week of trading ahead of Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell’s latest comments on inflation at the central bank’s annual Jackson Hole economic symposium.

“When you see the market right now dropping down like this, this is the market saying the Fed has to be more aggressive to slow the economy down further” if they want to bring inflation back down, said Robert Cantwell, portfolio manager at Upholdings.

Tech stocks declined on concerns over more aggressive rate hikes from the Fed. Amazon fell 3.6%. Semiconductor stocks dropped with Nvidia down about 4.6%. Shares of Netflix were roughly 6.1% lower following a downgrade to sell from CFRA.

Dow closes up 400 points, S&P 500 rises for fourth straight week as investors warm to cooler inflation

CW8888: With 2022 H1 earning reporting season completed; and DBS and SCI XD on Monday. Let see how STI reacts to DOW rally on Monday!

Stocks rose sharply on Friday, clinching the fourth straight positive week for the S&P 500 as investors celebrated signs that inflation may be peaking.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average added 424.38 points, or 1.27%, to close at 33,761.05. The S&P 500 gained 1.73% to finish at 4,280.15, and the Nasdaq Composite surged 2.09% to 13,047.19.

The S&P 500 rose 3.26% on the week, notching its longest weekly winning streak since November 2021. The Dow was up 2.92% for the week, while the Nasdaq Composite moved higher by 3.08%. For the Nasdaq, it was also the fourth positive week in a row.

The averages have been boosted by positive news on the inflation front. The consumer price index was flat from June to July, thanks in large part to falling gas prices, which lowered headline inflation. The producer price index showed a surprise decline. On Friday, import prices also fell more than expected.

This week’s moves have extended a market rally off its mid-June lows. The S&P 500 has gained 16.7% since the lows, and has cut its losses from the peak in half. The Dow had gained nearly 13% and the Nasdaq Composite has rebounded 22.6%.

The positive news has bolstered investor confidence, leading some to believe that the recent gains are more than a typical bear market rally.

U.S. public pensions suffer worst year since the financial crisis

Read? U.S. public pensions suffer worst year since the financial crisis

An ugly start to the year for stocks and bonds has put a dent in the retirement plans of millions of state and local employees.

U.S. public pension plans saw big losses during this year’s market rout, with median losses totaling 7.9% for the year ended June 30, according to data from institutional investment consultant Wilshire Associates.

This marked worst annual performance — and first annual decline — for public retirement systems since 2009, according to Wilshire's data.

Plans worth over $1 billion were down 7.3% for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2022, and their smaller counterparts saw declines totaling 12.1% over the same period.

Although declines were seen across the board, large plans — or those with over $1 billion in assets under management — registered smaller losses than plans handling assets below that threshold, with the bulk of these declines coming in the second quarter.

Large plans saw investment portfolios tumble 7.7% percent for the three-month period ended June 30, while the plunge totaled 10.4% for smaller pensions. This marked their worst quarter since the coronavirus pandemic began in 2020.

"The second quarter of 2022 was historical, but for all the wrong reasons,” Wilshire President Jason Schwarz said. “If you look back 50 years, you’ll be hard pressed to find another quarter where global equities were down by double-digits and investment grade bonds were down five-percent.”

U.S. stocks logged their worst first six months to start a year since 1970, with losses most prevalent in the second quarter. The S&P 500 capped the first half of 2022 in a bear market, down 20.6% from highs reached on January 3.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average shed 15.3% for its worst first six months of a year since 1962, and the Nasdaq's 29.5% drop during the period marked its worst first half on record.

The rout in equity and fixed income markets saw institutional assets plunge 10.6% for the year ending June 30, and 9.6% for the second quarter alone, across pensions, foundations, and endowments.

Losses came as elevated inflation, central bank rate hikes and fears of a recession weighed on sentiment.
