Children Eat Our Money Or Let Strangers Become Friend Eat Our Money???

Remember this fact!

Our money NOT spent by ourselves will never disappear. It will be spent by others!

Either spent by our children or let strangers become friends and help to spend our money?

One day; most of us will NOT know how to count our money!

Your Children University Fund. Who pays???

Read? Sending Your Kid To Overseas University Education

Real People. Real Story.

He has gotten his flat and getting married soon; but he is financially stress as he has supported himself and paid for himself his tertiary education as his father's CPF OA was not enough to pay for his tuition loan after using up for his elder sister's tertiary tuition fee.

While his peers are saving money; he is paying off his student loan and working hard to support himself. He blamed his father for his financial stress and repeatedly reminded his father that his sister didn't have this financial burden on her but he has. He felt so unfair!

Not easy to be parents as we have to plan for our children future too. If we failed to do that our children may silently blame us in their heart!

That is the fact of life as parents we have chosen to take this route so we must work harder to increase earning and improve on personal finance and investment. Bo pian as we have extra mouths to feed!

I DON'T WANT TO WORK HARD. IT WON'T MATTER ONCE I'M OLD!

Unfortunately some don't need to be old. It won't matter once they are seriously sick. They may not have any chance to come back as  their peers have overtaken them.  That is why when we are well, strong and healthy; we will have to learn another lifelong skills like investing, etc.

Uncle8888 Thanks His Past Him!!!

Comparing to many Uncle8888's peers when at that time HDB flats were so much affordable for average incomers; recently when he chatted with more peers on retirement planning; he realized that his war chest was so much bigger among his peers even though he has been a single household income earner with three children.

Uncle8888 now thanks the Past Him for the last 30 years effort for NOT buying a car while most of peers did and also NOT upgrading to a bigger home despite nagging from Home CEO.

Now his CPF OA is pui pui and sibei song!

Some of his older peers are now thinking hard of down-grading to free up more retirement fund while Uncle8888 is thinking of where to travel next year?

Emergency Fund. How Much Is Enough???

Read? Way beyond Emergency Fund! (3)

Depending on whom you ask?

If you happen to ask Uncle8888 who has been through "dark hours" of his time; you get unexpected answer from him.

It is in the magnitude of XX% of his net worth!

How will the Future You thank you? (2)

Read? How will the Future You thank you?

Case study for young ones for Future You!

He is 54 yrs old this year.

After reading a few times on CPF Reaching 55 booklet he is still not so clear.

He came to lim kopi with Uncle8888 after someone recommended him to talk to old man.

Uncle8888 helped to explain and illustrate it on the white board.

He belongs to one of those CPF Money Not Enough group.

Why?

For simple reason.

He has upgraded to 5-room HDB and still has 9 years of outstanding housing loan. His CPF OA balance is not enough to cover his outstanding housing loan.

He doesn't like the idea of down-grading or renting out one room.

Privacy to him is very important.

He has bigger worry now as he has heart illness and currently on long-term medication and may not be eligible for re-employment at 62 based on health reason.

HR may just retire him at 62.

How will the Future You thank you?

Some planning is not useless!

How will the Future You thank you?

Uncle8888 said Thank You! You have done well for your financial planning.

1. You have cut losses on your ILP and avoid this time bomb.

2. For many years, you have resisted your wife for upgrading to bigger and spacious 5-room HDB or Executive. Now, you have plenty of cash in CPF OA earning the best interest rate in Singapore @ 2.5% CAGR.

3. You have two low cost group insurance coverages.

4. You have three endowment policies for your three children to fund their university education. The last endowment policy will mature before the age of 60 as the escalation cost of premiums from the age of 60 is significant! This was the best advice coming from my life insurance agent.  It is good that you got yourself educated earlier in your life that once you are retired you are not an valuable asset that will need protection by life insurance. You just need comprehensive medical insurances and self-insured funding to get through the rest of your life.

5. You have awaken not too late at early 40s and seriously started to plan and taken short-term trading and long-term investing investing as the road to reach financial independence by 55; but you have missed the target by 1.5 years. It is better late than never. LOL!

6. Against the common wisdom of housing loan as good debt, you thought that it was better to fully paid up your HDB housing loan as early as possible. Consequently, being debt-free, you were in better position to support your wife's idea of becoming full time housewife to look after her three kids. Wife happy. Man peace. LOL!

How do you compute your net worth?

Generally, we compute Net Worth = Assets - Liabilities

Generally and globally accepted standard of computation of assets is to exclude your residential home (however, you can choose of your properties and designate it as residential if you have more than one)

I am more conservative and aware that some assets seem to be moving away from my reach e.g. CPF SA and MA as Government likes to put its strong hand in them.  I might as well exclude them as assets and treat them like bonus.

My Net Worth = Assets - Liabilities   (excluding CPF SA and MA)

Currently, I have zero liabilities.

Money Mind and mindset

The diagram below is the CASHFLOW Quadrant.
E For employee
     S for self-employed
      B for business owner
 I for investor

Most people still feel more comfortable spending more time and effort in E or S quadrant as staying in this quadrant will rarely cause them to lose money. Losing hard-earned money is a real pain in the neck.

Many will still try I quadrant; but soon they realize it is not as easy as they initially thought. So after a long while, they finally realize that they are not making any real progress but in fact losing more money than expected. Finally, they either give up or totally lose confidence in I quadrant and don't believe anymore that I is the way to go for them. They think it is still better to spend more time and effort in E or S.

B is reserved for who has that entrepreneur spirit.

"CAGR is your Speed-O-Meter in your investment marathon race" - Createwealth8888

$200K to $1M - Full Marathon
$500K to $1M - Half Marathon
$750K to $1M - Quarter Marathon

$200K to $1M - Full Marathon

You can't walk a Full Marathon, you have to run most of the time; may be occasionally can jog or walk.

Even you can reach the finishing line by walking the Full Marathon; but you will find that all marathon officials and other runners are at home sleeping liao.

$500K to $1M - Half Marathon

You can run or jog.

$750K to $1M - Quarter Marathon

You can even walk.

The moral of the Story

Know your own marathon race and check your Speed-O-Meter. When you need to run most of the time then you better not walk for too long.

Do Hungry People Take Bigger Financial Risks? - Part 2

Do Hungry People Take Bigger Financial Risks?

Yes, if we wanted to reach there in less than 25 years.

The final destination can be the same for most of us; but the road travelled may be totally differently depending what we have at the start of our journey. Account size does matter!

Do Hungry People Take Bigger Financial Risks?

The New York Times
On Tuesday June 29, 2010,

Do Hungry People Take Bigger Financial Risks?

Forget the Volcker Rule, a Tobin tax, bonus caps and other Washington proposals intended to make our financial system more stable. Maybe what Wall Street's risk-loving bankers really need is a better diet.

That is one possible implication of a fascinating new study, which finds that people who are hungry are more risk-seeking, and people who are sated are more risk-averse.

Researchers put study subjects on different diets to affect their metabolic states, and then week after week gave them with options to participate in different kinds of lotteries. Some of the lotteries were riskier than others, in terms of their expected and potential payouts. Generally speaking, when subjects were in hungrier states, they chose the riskier lottery options, and when they were full they choose safer lotteries.

The authors suggest that this means metabolic states, and the hormones associated with them, can affect our appetite for all sorts of risks. From the study:Changes in metabolic state systematically altered economic decision making...

A direct comparison can be made with Prospect Theory, where changes in wealth below a reference point induce risk-seeking behaviour, while earnings above a reference point promote risk-aversion. Similar reference-dependent change in risk attitude for food rewards has also been seen in animals. The study is based on a small sample -- about 20 students -- but seems destined to inspire further research on the evolutionary advantages of financial risk-taking.

Similarly for investing, when the account size is smaller one should take bigger risks to grow the wealth at faster rate and when the account size is bigger one should take smaller risks and moves more towards perservation of wealth.

Good deals with high returns will never come to retail investors.

The main purpose of any investment product is to raise fund to meet the investment objective.

So whenever there are good deals with good returns; private bankers, investment managers, deal-makers, private-equities and specialists everywhere will be fighting among themselves and rushing to their rich clients to offer them and they will have no problem in raising the required fund.

These investment managers are well aware of the consequences of selling to the rich clients misrepresented bad deals!

Only for deals that may turn potentially bad or negative that these investment managers will have no other choices but to spend time and efforts to organize road-shows to sell them to retail investors e.g land banking, oilpods, etc.

This is common sense in the investment domain. The rich clients are given first right of refusal for any investment opportunities. Why retail investors don't seem to understand it?

Good deals with high returns will never come to retail investors.

Avoid any investment products that promise high returns;
but are sold to retail investors.

Avoid them or else you may get roasted!

Risks And Returns - Part 2

Risks And Returns

Low Risk High Return

In the real investment world, there is no such thing as Low Risk High Return; otherwise investing becomes so simple. Even uncles and aunties also can become fund managers.

During market crashes, the yield of some financial instruments at that moment are rising due to the perceived risks are increasing.

Potential buyers are demanding high returns for taking perceived higher risks. When the perceived risk gets higher, the yield must get even higher; otherwise the market will never find willing buyers. However, there will be some brave early buyers who believe such higher risks are not real.

In the market, from time to time, there may be some isolated opportunities for low risk high return available to some better informed ones; but soon load of buyers will come and chase them back to low risk low return.

So generally speaking, there is no such thing as low risk high return. If you happen to know such low risk high return financial instrument available to you, then keep it to yourself; otherwise load of buyers will come after them.

Investing in businesses that you know - good strategy?

I believe you know your company's businesses well enough to adopt such strategies - Investing in business that you know. Will you  invest more into your company stock? Is this a good strategy?

I really doubt it. I didn't own a single unit of my company stock for one simple reason - protecting the down side.

If my company performs well, I will likely to benefit from its good performance by getting better bonuses.

But, what will happen to me if I hold large position of my company stock in my portfolio and the company doesn't perform well?

Its stock price may fall badly and my investment portfolio also get hit. I may face the risk of bonus cut or in the worse case got retrenched. Double whammy, right?

Low Risk High Return

Risks And Returns

I realize that "Low Risk High Return" can be made possible by the Product Creator by taking part of your money and distribute it as High Return back to you.

For a short while you will be getting high return; but I bet that your short-term happiness will soon turn into your worst nightmares when you can't get back your capital.

This is somewhat similar to upfront interests paid to you for your Fixed Deposit offered by some banks. It is just your little money back saving scheme. The interests paid at maturity is the real rate calculated on the deposit less the upfront interests.

Interesting?

More Money or More Pay

If you want to take home more pay, then work harder at your job to get more bonuses or keep getting promoted.

If you want more money; it doesn't necessary mean you work harder at your job. But, you must make your investment dollars work harder.

See the differences!

I want to reach the stage of financial independence so that I can Get out of Rat Race.

What is your primary reason for seeking the path towards financial independence or freedom?

If one doesn't mind the rat race or happy with working till our health permits, then seeking the path towards financial independence or freedom may not really matter anymore. True or false?

Resident wants ban on CPF cash for investments

"Trading appears deceptively easy. When a beginner wins, he feels brilliant and invincible. Then he takes wild risks and loses everything" - Dr. Alexander Elder

If you ask me should you invest your CPF investment fund: Using CPF Investment Fund For Investing

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Kor Kian Beng

Mon, Mar 29, 2010
The Straits Times

RETIRED sailor Goh Tor Zin said he lost $350,000 of his Central Provident Fund savings through bad stock market investments, and yesterday made a radical suggestion at a ministerial dialogue.

The 59-year-old Kampong Kembangan resident sought a ban on using CPF money for such investments, saying the CPF scheme should stick to its original aims of helping Singaporeans save for their retirement, medical and housing needs: 'When I retired, I collected only $35,000. I lost $350,000. The sum may be small for some, but for me, I can buy many packets of chicken rice.'

Mr Goh, who is unmarried and lives with his 91-year-old father in a five-room Lengkong Tiga flat, said he made a similar suggestion to the CPF when he collected his CPF money on turning 55: 'They told me that I don't have to buy (shares), and that no one forced me to do so. I said, 'Yes if you don't sell drugs, I won't buy drugs. So you are not wrong, I am also not wrong'.'
