Read? Here’s How Much You’d End Up with If You Had Invested S$20,000 in UOB a Decade Ago
Last year, we conducted such a thought experiment with Singapore’s largest bank, DBS Group (SGX: D05).
We showed that S$10,000 invested in a reputable bank would have garnered you S$25,688 in a decade.
This is NOT a thought experiment; but Real People and True Stories on DBS!
Uncle8888 invested S$7,530 in DBS and made S$43,130 in two decades or 573% ROC!
Total dividends accumulated over 20 years is S$15,710 or 209% ROC; and it is kept safely in CPF OA earning 2.5% interests P.A. No compounding return. It is just holding on to DBS as Yield Hog over 20 years!

CW,
ReplyDeleteYour real people true story example is great to illustrate the difference between starting young and starting late:
Example 1 - Age 25
-----------------------------
$7,530 invested in DBS has turned into $43,130 after 20 years at age 45
Example 2 - Age 45
---------------------------
$75,300 invested in DBS has turned into $431,300 after 20 years at age 65
Size matters!
It doesn't help if at age 45 you can only "afford" to invest $7,530 in DBS...
Someone who can sock $50K every year under his mattress for 20 years at age 45, with ZERO compounding gains (4% yield - 4% inflation) may do better.
Well capitalised Save More wins over undercapitalised Earn More!
I fair or what? Once in a while must poke Earn More myself too ;)
Saving or investing is a Money Game and Size really matters! Earn more and Save more is the real winner as saver or investor.
