Application forms for Lasting Power of Attorney simplified, registration fees waived

Read?  Book: Mental Healthcare Of The Elderly

CW8888: Dementia is real and can happen to us.

Even you have $XXX,XXX or $X,XXX,XXX passive income also no use as you don't know what is money. How to manage your money?

We need  Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA).

After seeing my late FIL and now my MIL in the state of dementia. It can only get worse. It is terrible scary!

Don't just pray, pray!

Take action in Sep this year.

SINGAPORE: The government is trying to encourage more Singaporeans to make an application for a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA).

That's when one legally appoints another person to make decisions and act on his behalf, in the event he's mentally incapacitated.

Forms have been simplified, taking away legal and technical jargons, and the $50 registration for applications have also been waived for the next two years.

Applicants though will still need to pay professional fees charged by LPA certificate issuers, such as accredited General Practitioners and lawyers.

Fees for this cost at least $50.

However, registration fees still apply if an applicant needs to customise his LPA.

To make it more convenient, SingPost will offer free postal service for the submission of forms, also over the next two years.

The changes come after feedback about the LPA, since it was launched four years ago.

The new initiatives kick off from September this year.

So far, over 6,000 people have made applications.

The LPA was introduced as part of the Mental Capacity Act, taking into account Singapore's ageing population.

The aim is to get people to plan ahead, while they still can - to identify a trusted person they can rely on, to settle their affairs, should they ever lose their state of mind.

This could be if dementia strikes, if a person has a stroke or if he suffers head trauma, as a result of an accident.

Without an LPA, there is often a long and cumbersome court process involved, when decisions on personal welfare or assets have to be made, for a person who's lost his mental capacity.

He is often quoted in many trading previews, seminars, forums, chat boxes or by bloggers.

Richard Dennis?

He proved that traders can be trained by doing it!

Who are the greatest investors?

Undisputed. This is Mr. Warren Buffet.

One more name?

Peter Lych. The man who coined the word - multi-bagger.

Now, who don't love holding multi-baggers in their portfolio?

Temasek reports 3.7 per cent rise in net value of investment portfolio

SINGAPORE: Temasek Holdings on Tuesday (July 8) reported a 3.7 per cent increase in the net value of its investment portfolio - from S$215 billion in 2013 to S$223 billion in the last fiscal year.
In its annual Temasek Review report released on Tuesday, the investment company said Group net profit for the year ended March 31, 2014, rose 2.8 per cent to S$10.9 billion, from S$10.6 billion in the same period last year.

Total shareholder return (TSR), which is Temasek's key measure of performance, was 1.5 per cent for the past year, down from 8.6 per cent in the previous 12 months. It attributed this mainly to weakness in key Asian markets.

Temasek's  five-year TSR was 11 per cent and

its 10-year TSR was 9 per cent, which the firm said reflects the steady growth in its portfolio.

Longer term 20-year TSR was 6 per cent, and

14 per cent for 30 years, it added.

FINANCIAL SERVICES, LIFE SCIENCES TOP INVESTMENT SECTORS

In the last fiscal year, Temasek invested a total of S$24 billion and divested nearly S$10 billion, for a total net investment of $14 billion.

Temasek Chairman Lim Boon Heng said in the statement that "this year has been one of our most active years for new investments - the most active since the Global Financial Crisis". The new investments are driven by the continued recovery in the global economy as well as lower asset prices in Asia, which offered attractive investment opportunities.

Temasek said the top three sectors for investments during the year were in financial services, life sciences and energy. Among its investments in financial services was the acquisition of a 1.1 per cent stake in United Kingdom-based Lloyds Banking Group.

In life sciences, Temasek invested almost US$1 billion in Gilead Sciences - a firm that develops treatments for cancer, HIV and infectious diseases. It also invested about S$2 billion in Pavilion Energy, which focuses on Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) in the energy space.

Temasek's key divestments over the year included Singapore's Tiger Airways and part of its stake in India's Bharti Telecom.

It ended the year with an underlying portfolio exposure of 31 per cent in Singapore, 25 per cent in China and 10 per cent in Australia. However, its exposure in North America and Europe grew to over 14 per cent from 12 per cent in the previous year.

Looking ahead, Mr Lim said that there will be both challenges and opportunities with the rapidly changing world.

"Even as we mark our 40th anniversary, we embrace the future with all that it brings. At 40, our journey has just begun," he added.

Singaporeans went on massive property buying spree abroad in 2013: MAS

But many buyers are unaware of risks.

More Singaporeans are foraying into overseas property markets, but many of these buyers are unaware of the risks associated with their purchases. In a statement released yesterday, the Monetary Authority of Singapore issued warnings against overseas property purchases.

According to the MAS, the value of overseas purchases made through real estate agents in Singapore has grown to S$2.0 billion in 2013 from S$1.4 billion in 2012.

“MAS is concerned that some individuals may be overextending themselves through such investments, or may not recognise the risks involved. With global interest rates at very low levels, it is quite understandable that Singaporeans should want better returns than what bank deposits offer. But most local savers already own a property in Singapore, and have to be concerned about how much concentration they can afford to have in properties, especially when taking risks in overseas property markets,” the MAS cautioned.

Here’s more from the statement:
MAS has therefore issued warnings about overseas property purchases:

First, the risk of price fluctuations may be more difficult to assess or manage in overseas markets, which investors are likely to be less familiar with.

Second, there are foreign exchange and interest rate risks.

Third, the legal and regulatory framework governing property purchases and financing agreements in other countries may not provide the level of protection that investors are used to in Singapore.

The Council for Estate Agencies (CEA) has also been highlighting these risks. CEA issued an online guide in March 2014 on what investors in overseas properties should look out for. (These include finding out about rules or restrictions on foreign property purchases and ownership, the taxes payable, and the dispute resolution avenues available in the foreign market.)

To encourage financial prudence on the part of both borrowers and financial institutions (FIs), MAS’ Total Debt Servicing Ratio (TDSR) framework covers all loans taken from FIs in Singapore to finance property purchases, whether in Singapore or overseas.

When a borrower seeks a property loan, the FI is required to include in the TDSR all existing debt service obligations, including those relating to any foreign property purchases.

S'pore consortium to develop Myanmar special economic zone

SINGAPORE: A Singapore-based consortium led by CPG Consultants has been appointed to develop the master plan for one of three large special economic zones planned by Myanmar that will include a deep-sea port and an industrial park.

The CPG consortium that will help plan the development of Myanmar's Kyauk Phyu Special Economic Zone (SEZ) include real estate services firm DTZ Debenham Tie Leung, Ernst & Young Solutions LLP and consultancy Global Maritime And Port Services (GMAPS).

Kyauk Phyu, in western Myanmar, is one of three SEZs earmarked for development by the country's government. The other two SEZs are Dawei in the south of the country and Thilawa, which is near Yangon.

When fully developed, the Kyauk Phyu SEZ will cover some 75 square kilometres.

The consortium will invite interested firms to submit their expressions of interests in July 2014 for phase one of the economic zone, which will include three key elements -- development of a deep sea port, an industrial park, and an integrated residential area with education, health care, and recreational facilities.

On its part, the Myanmar government will upgrade the existing road network in Kyauk Phyu SEZ.

A new power plant and power lines are also under construction, CPG said.

CPG declined to say how much development of the SEZ is expected to cost.

CPG Consultants is a subsidiary of CPG Corp, the corporate entity that was once Singapore's Public Works Department.

Wifi firm Gowex says results fake, heads to bankruptcy

MADRID: Spanish free wifi provider Let's Gowex revealed on Sunday its accounts have been falsified for at least four years and said it is filing for bankruptcy protection.

Gowex, which offers wifi services in world capitals including Paris and New York, made the devastating admission after days of protesting that a damaging US report on its operations was incorrect and defamatory.

Gowex president Jenaro Garcia Martin informed his board the previous day that, in fact, he had faked the company's results, the firm said in a statement released by Madrid's Alternative Equity Market.
"Garcia Martin, chief executive and president, said before several board members that the company accounts for at least the last four years do not reflect the true picture, attributing this falsehood to himself," Gowex said.

Board members revoked the chief executive's powers and accepted his resignation, it said.

"The board, confronted by the expectation that the company would not be able to cope with its maturing current debt payments, agreed to file a voluntary request for bankruptcy."

Gowex had been expected to give a detailed response on Monday to allegations about its operations, which had sent its shares plunging 60.2 per cent to 7.92 euros in two days before they were suspended from trade by Madrid's junior stock market, the Alternative Equity Market.

- Shares worth "zero" -

US firm Gotham City Research sparked the freefall Tuesday by publishing a highly critical report, which had previously been described by Gowex as "unfounded and defamatory".
Gotham City Research called Gowex a "charade" and said its revenues were far lower than the company had reported.

Gotham City said its target price for Gowex shares was zero.

In its 93-page report, Gotham City said Gowex's actual revenues were "at most" 10 per cent of those reported.

About 90 per cent of Gowex's telecommunications revenues came from undisclosed related parties, Gotham City said.

Gowex's audit fee was only 40,000 euros, far less than would be expected for a company generating revenues of more than 180 million euros, the firm said.

"We have evidence Gowex's largest customer was really itself," the report said.
After Gowex issued the statement saying that Garcia Martin had faked the firm's results, he announced on Twitter that he had made a "voluntary confession in court".

"I am willing to face the consequences and cooperate with justice," the former wealth management manager added.

The posting followed an earlier Twitter message in which he said he was "wholeheartedly sorry" and apologised to "everyone".

The European professional investors association ASINVER filed a suit Friday against Gowex with the Spanish public prosecutor alleging false accounting.

"Given the lack of response by the company for requests for more information, we had no choice but to ask the public prosecutor to look into the issue because it is very likely that a crime took place," Javier Flores of the Spanish branch of ASINVER told public television.

Spanish stock market regulators are also likely to face scrutiny over their supervision of the firm's activities.

On Wednesday, the Spanish market regulator, the CNMV, said it had asked the US Securities and Exchange Commission and Britain's Financial Conduct Authority "for information about Gotham City Research LLC and its administrators".

The CNMV said it did so "in order to analyse whether the document published by that entity on Let's Gowex could constitute a possible abuse of the market".

On the same day, Gowex had issued a statement confirming its 2013 revenues of 182.6 million euros ($249 million) and stressing that the figures had been audited.

"We are a high growth company that is financially stable and very solid and we are being attacked," Garcia Martin said that day in an interview with Spanish public television.

IMF: global recovery to accelerate in 2015, no brutal slowdown in China

AIX-EN-PROVENCE France - Global economic activity should strengthen in the second half of this year and accelerate in 2015 although momentum could be weaker than expected, IMF chief Christine Lagarde said on Sunday, adding that the Fund did not expect a sharp slowdown in China.

Lagarde said central banks' accommodative policies could have only limited impact on demand and that countries should also act to boost growth by investing in infrastructure, education and health, provided their debt stays sustainable.

The IMF's update of its global economic outlook, expected later this month, will be slightly different from the forecasts published in April, she said.

"Global activity is picking up but the momentum could be less strong than we had expected because potential growth is weaker and investment ... remains subdued."

Lagarde estimated that growth in China this year would be between 7 and 7.5 percent.

"Despite the many responses to the crisis ... recovery is modest, laborious, fragile, and measures to boost demand, despite the goodwill of central banks, will find their limits," she told a conference in southern France.

"We must therefore take steps to boost efforts to strengthen growth," she added. "This is the opportunity in a number of countries to relaunch investment, without threatening the viability of public finances."

Lagarde said several times in her speech that although now could be the time for some countries to boost public investment, not all of them could afford to do so.

After a first quarter that was "much more disappointing than expected", there was now a "sensible rebound" in the U.S. economy, she said. Growth should accelerate as long as the Federal Reserve's withdrawal from easy monetary policy is orderly and there is a precise medium term budget framework.

The euro zone is slowly coming out of recession and it is crucial that countries continue to carry out reforms, including completing the banking union, Lagarde said.

"Looking at emerging Asian countries, and in particular China, we are reassured because we do not see a brutal slowdown but rather a slight slowing of a growth that has become ... more sustainable and that we see at 7 to 7.5 percent this year." REUTERS

Dow closes above 17,000 for first time

NEW YORK: Wall Street stocks on Thursday closed at new records, with the Dow crossing 17,000 after surprisingly robust US jobs growth pointed to a stronger economy.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average shot up 92.02 points (0.54 per cent) to 17,068.26, while the S&P 500 gained 10.82 points (0.55 per cent) to 1,985.44. Both indices closed at records highs for the third straight session.

The tech-rich Nasdaq Composite Index advanced 28.19 points (0.63 per cent) to 4,485.93

The Labour Department said the US economy added a healthy 288,000 jobs in June, while the unemployment rate fell to 6.1 per cent from 6.3 per cent in May.

The solid jobs data drove stocks higher in a holiday-shortened session that closed three hours early. Stocks markets are closed on Friday for Independence Day.

"The market is applauding the strong jobs number and the signs that it shows economic growth is in fact returning as we expected after there was a weather-related slowdown in the first quarter," said David Levy, portfolio manager at Kenjol Capital Management.

Still, Levy said, whether the market continues to rise will depend on upcoming second-quarter corporate earnings reports and whether investors believe the Federal Reserve is likely to move up its timetable for raising interest rates.

In other economic news, the European Central Bank, as expected, held its benchmark interest rates unchanged. The Commerce Department reported that the US trade deficit fell to US$44.4 billion in May, a bigger decline than analysts expected.

The Institute for Supply Management's non-manufacturing purchasing managers index dipped to 56.0 in June from a strong advance to 56.3 in May. The services sector reading came in lower than the 56.5 analyst forecast, but remained well above 50, which indicates growth.

DBS most valuable brand in Singapore again

SINGAPORE: DBS Bank is the most valuable brand in the annual Top 100 Singapore Brands ranking for a second year running. DBS grew its brand value by US$535 million to US$4.01 billion (S$5.0 billion) over the last year, said London-based consultancy, Brand Finance.

It helped the bank extend its lead over the Singapore Airlines (SIA) brand by US$761 million. DBS contributed more than 30 per cent of the total brand value increase of US$1.71 billion across the top 100 Singapore brands.

The bank has managed to nearly double its brand value in three years, from US$2.04 billion to US$4.01 billion and its brand value today is almost double that of other bank brands in Singapore.

"The fact that DBS has generated a significant lead over SIA in a very short period of time clearly communicates the importance and significance of a strong brand for DBS. It will likely stay at the No. 1 position for a few years unless there is a game-changing strategy amongst the other top five brands," said Mr Samir Dixit, Managing Director of Brand Finance Asia Pacific.

Keppel to perform the world’s first-of-its-type FLNG vessel conversion for Golar

Contract worth US$735 million plus options for another two similar units

Following the announcement of 25 June 2014, Keppel Shipyard Ltd (Keppel Shipyard), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Keppel Offshore & Marine Ltd (Keppel O&M), wishes to announce that the contract which it has entered into with Golar Hilli Corporation (Golar), a subsidiary of Golar LNG Ltd, to perform the world's first-of-its-type conversion of an existing Moss LNG carrier, the Hilli, into a Floating Liquefaction Vessel (FLNGV), has become effective. The contract is worth approximately US$735 million.

In carrying out the FLNGV conversion, Keppel Shipyard shall be responsible for the provision of the design, detailed engineering and procurement of the marine systems and all of the conversion-related construction services. Keppel Shipyard's scope also includes engaging Black & Veatch to provide design, procurement and commissioning support services for the topsides and liquefaction process. Black & Veatch's PRICO® technology has been selected for the liquefaction process because of its long-established record in the marketplace.

This contract, which includes options for another two similar units, follows the completion of a year-long Front-End Engineering and Design (FEED) study by Keppel Shipyard and Black & Veatch. The FEED study was conducted as part of the terms of a term sheet agreement with Golar to convert up to three LNG carriers into FLNG vessels.

The conversion has been approved in principle by DNV in accordance with their classification rules and international standards. The FLNGV will take about 31 months to convert and is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2017.

Mr. Michael Chia, Managing Director (Marine & Technology), Keppel O&M, said, "The FEED study for Golar has come into fruition with the award of the world's first FLNG conversion project to Keppel Shipyard. We are excited to collaborate with trend-setting partners such as Golar and Black & Veatch. Keppel Shipyard had successfully delivered to Golar the world's first Floating Storage and Regasification Unit (FSRU) back in 2008, which was followed by two more similar units.

"It is an honour to be entrusted once again by Golar with this definitive FLNG vessel, which reaffirms Keppel's leadership in complex offshore conversion projects. We see this project as another excellent opportunity to offer innovative solutions to help address the growing midstream needs in bringing small and mid-scale LNG to market to meet the rising global demand for energy. Mid-sized FLNG solutions such as this one offer a faster and more cost effective liquefaction solution."

According to the Douglas-Westwood World FLNG Market Forecast, the global FLNG industry is expected to attract more than US$65 billion of investments through to 2020, driven by rising costs of onshore LNG terminals. Asia-Pacific, in particular, is expected to draw a majority of investments in the FLNG sector with its sizeable line-up of regasification and liquefaction projects.

Detailed design and engineering activities will commence shortly, and the Hilli will be delivered to Keppel Shipyard within 2014 to initiate renewal of key marine systems onboard the vessel while the manufacturing of topsides commences.

The above contract is not expected to have any material impact on the net tangible assets and earnings per share of Keppel Corporation Limited for the current financial year.

Dow, S&P 500 edge to records ahead of June jobs report

NEW YORK: The Dow and S&P 500 edged to new records on Wednesday ahead the official US jobs data for June, with the outlook buoyed by a strong ADP private sector report.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 20.17 points (0.12 per cent) to 16,976.24, while the broad-based S&P 500 added 1.30 points (0.07 per cent) at 1,974.62. Both notched records for the second day in a row.

The tech-rich Nasdaq Composite Index slipped 0.92 points (0.02 per cent) to 4,457.73.

Payrolls company ADP said the private sector added 281,000 jobs in June, surging higher from 179,000 in May. That came ahead of Thursday's Department of Labor report on job creation and unemployment nationwide in June.

Singaporeans' retirement nest egg may not be enough: DBS survey

SINGAPORE: The amount of money that emerging affluent (EA) individuals in Singapore intend to set aside for their retirement fund will only last them about 13 years, based on their expected expenditure after they leave the workforce, a new DBS survey revealed.

Findings of the study, released on Wednesday (July 2), showed that 73 per cent of respondents plan to retire between 55 and 65 years old with savings of S$571,715 on average. More than 85 per cent said they expect to live on a retirement income of S$3,500 per month for the next 15 to 20 years or more.

"This reflects a gap as the emerging affluent individuals' retirement fund would last them only 13 years, which falls short of the average life expectancy in Singapore," the survey report said. "For residents born in the 1980s, the average life expectancy is 70 to 75 years, while those born in the 2000s have a life expectancy of 80 to 84 years."

DBS defines emerging affluent in two categories: Adults aged 18 to 29 with a personal monthly income of more than S$2,500 and those aged 30 to 59 with a personal monthly income of more than S$5,000. The study was based on a sample size of 800 Singapore residents.

RETIREMENT PLANNING NEGLECTED

Another disconnect: The survey also revealed that while 76 per cent of respondents said providing for retirement is a priority, only 49 per cent have a financial plan in place.

Of those who plan ahead, those who start early typically begin planning their finances at 28, while the late starters begin when they are around 39 years old, according to the survey.

The survey also found that "established" EAs - defined by the bank as those aged 35 to 49, single and working - allocate most of their incomes towards investment and savings. This segment set aside 51 per cent of their income, compared to the "family focused" - aged 25 to 62, married and working or not working - who placed the least at 43 per cent. A significant portion of the latter group's income goes to loans, DBS said.

"With longer life expectancy and changing expectations of retirement living, it has become increasingly important for people to start investing for retirement early. An early head start, even if it is with a small amount, will increase the probability of meeting your lifestyle needs when you retire," said Mr Jeremy Soo, Managing Director and Head of Consumer Banking Group at DBS Bank.

Attracting retail investors: mindset change needed

Retail investors are like any others in the market, whether big or small - they will trade if they think they can make money

EVER since the penny segment crashed last October, the local stock market has suffered from a withdrawal of retail participation. Volume today is about half what it was before the crash, prompting the release of a consultation paper from the authorities on ways to strengthen the market in the wake of that collapse.

The measures recommended - but not yet implemented - are all sound and should enhance the market's infrastructure in no small measure, but as yet there has been no discernible effect on small investor presence or sentiment. Despite the fact that a record number of Central Depository (CDP) accounts were opened in the past 12 months, actual trading remains depressed.

It's a perplexing problem which thus confronts the Singapore Exchange (SGX) - what should be done to bring retail players back?

Retail investors are like any others in the market, whether big or small - they will trade if they think they can make money. Ergo, it has to be that the bulk of them are absent today because they believe they cannot make money, or worse, that investing/trading in Singapore stocks means losing money.

Orders are for FPSO conversion, subsea construction vessel

By Malminderjit Singh

KEPPEL Offshore & Marine (Keppel O&M) announced yesterday that its wholly owned subsidiaries, Keppel Shipyard and Keppel Singmarine, have secured contracts worth a total of $368 million.

Keppel Shipyard won a deal for the conversion of a floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) vessel for Armada Kraken, a wholly owned subsidiary of Malaysia's Bumi Armada.
The new FPSO, which is scheduled for delivery in the third quarter of 2015, will be a harsh-environment unit that is designed for operations in the North Sea under a stringent regulatory regime.

Keppel Shipyard's work scope for this FPSO project includes refurbishment and life extension works, upgrading of living quarters to accommodate 90 staff, installation of an internal turret mooring system as well as the installation and integration of topside process modules.

Dow, S&P 500 open third quarter with fresh records

NEW YORK: Wall Street stocks on Tuesday barrelled higher to new records, opening the third quarter with big gains following strong US auto sales and Chinese manufacturing data.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 129.47 points (0.77 per cent) to 16,956.07, while the S&P 500 shot up 13.09 (0.67 per cent) to 1,973.32. Both were record closing highs.

The tech-rich Nasdaq Composite Index bolted 50.47 (1.14 per cent) higher to 4,458.65.

Analysts said the market was spurred by data that showed Chinese manufacturing activity expanded in June at the fastest pace of the year and a surprisingly strong batch of US auto sales.
The auto industry sold 1.42 million vehicles in June in the US, well above the Edmunds.com projection of 1.36 million.

"The market has some pent-up demand" after trading sideways for the last week or so, said Art Hogan, chief market strategist at Wunderlich Securities.

Other US economic data was mixed. The Institute for Supply Management's manufacturing purchasing managers index dipped 0.1 point to 55.3 in June, a disappointment next to a forecasted gain of 0.4 point, but well above the 50 reading that separates growth from contraction.

The Commerce Department reported US construction spending in May increased a less than expected 0.1 per cent.

How to protect your money "safely" from the evil eyes and hands???

1. Never show off your money to anyone including your relatives.

2. Never tell anyone including your relatives that you have lots of spare cash rotting in the banks. One day, these people will come to you with some investment ideas to generate good return.

Human likes to show off their money. No?
