Investing Performance Update - revised presentation format

It is very important for me to keep my eyes on the ball at all times to achieve financial independence by Sep 2011 i.e. less than 4 years away.

There are two key targets that I would need to achieve by looking at this table:

1) To double the YTD ROC by Dec 2008

2) To achieve more than 19.2% in Yearly Compounded ROC by Dec 2007

It is getting difficult to make money in current market condition. I am adopting hit-and-run strategy to avoid being caught in any major correction.

Aug 07 - End Game Goal update

Now, I firmly believe the power of compounding by never withdrawing any profit. The sharp correction in Aug 07 has lesser impact on the overall value of the portfolio compared to the correction in Feb 07.

FI trend update after dramatic sell down and recovery of STI

Portfolio value was really hit by the meltdown in the week. Approaching to cross the the safety line. Last Friday, I took drastic step to clear out those dead wood such as SPH, JTIL and swap for KEP, OCBC, and HSE.

Clearing of these dead wood has caused me big losses, but during meltdown it is also the right time to buy potential winners cheaply. Let see in a few months, whether such swapping strategy make sense?

Impact of today correction on my FI target trend

My portfolio is much stronger now to take correction since the last major correction on Feb 28, 2007. It is important that we keep focus on the our long term objective despite periodic market corrections. It is not wise to panic and sell off. Keep on building surpluses and periodic correction will not have significant damage.

Investing article in Sunday Times Aug 5 2007 ME & MY MONEY

Sunday Times Aug 5 2007 ME & MY MONEY

Main points are as follows:

• Knowing what stocks to buy is not good enough

• To make money, a person must know when to buy and well as well

• When you buy, it must always be based on fundamentals. But knowing what to buy is not going to make you money. Money is made from knowing when to buy and when to sell. That's when the technical analysis part comes in

• When someone goes in to buy a stock, there are elements of greed and fear that result in a decision to purchase at a certain price. These emotions are constant through the decades and you can map the behavior and use the past to predict the future as people don't change.

There are three ways to build wealth.

 Most people will work to build wealth; but if you doesn’t have a high-paying job, you can work until cows come home and may just making ends meet. (CREATEWEALTH: Fewer people can really make it to high-paying job, how many VP, EVP, CEO are there?? BIG RAT race!!!!)

 The next group of people starts their own business. Some make it but many don't. (CREATEWEALTH: Many of us are not in this group, many of us dream of it and talk about it. If you don't dare to take some money to invest, don't ever think or dream to be in this group. FAT HOPE!!!!)

 The third group makes money work for them through investments. A decent-paying job and invest to make money work. (CREATEWEALTH: Only those with passion in investing, constantly learning from it, control the emotion of GREED and FEAR; and STRONGLY BELIEVE IT THAT IT CAN BE DONE, AND HAVE A PLAN, AND A ULTIMATE GOAL will made it, perhaps it is less than 20-30% in this group will made it, many will fail, and bang their hearts)

• Know when to be aggressive and when to be conservative. Know yourself, your level of greed and fear. (CREATEWEALTH: To be aggressive, you need to follow the stock history and company fundamental very closely, and strike at the right time by using pyramiding the investment method, you will win BIG if direction moves in your favor)

Portfolio update - contra SML

Historically, STI is weak during Aug-Sep so it is better to regret than to be sorry.

Wednesday, 1 August 2007

Portfolio update - add SPC and SML

Wow! Correction today!!! S'pore shares fall over 3% Singapore share prices skidded 3.27 per cent on Wednesday as concerns over the troubled US sub-prime mortgage market spooked investors, dealers said.

The Straits Times Index dropped 115.95 points to 3,431.71 on volume of 4.94 billion shares worth $4.31 billion (US$2.85 billion). There were 110 rising issues, 1,014 losers and 442 issues were even.

But, to me it is a good time to buy, especially SPC in view of 0.20 dividend payable in Aug 22.

SML is announcing result tomorrow will also provide support. I will contra SML tomorrow

This correction caused some damages to my portfolio; but, I don't think it is serious enough for me to cut losses. Need to watch over it tightly especially in Aug - Sep period where STI is seasonally weak.

End Game Goal update

Visualization of your Goal is very powerful, and even more powerful if the goal is shared and made known to others.

I have slightly passed through the 50% mark in term of time, and I want to achieve at least 67% in term of FI Goal by Dec 07.

Cheers!

Wow! STI corrected earlier than expected. I don't think I will made any transactions over the next few trading days so I will close the book for Jul 07. Fortunately, I have managed to sell all my SPC holding at a good profit. Never try to maximize profit, it is always prudent to take partial profits on the way up.

Another woman colleague with two young kids resigned, probably due to works pressure, she has been working very late for quite sometime as the boss is very pushy. It is important for us to have plan in place to achieve financial independence so that we could get out of the rat race; and stop being push around by bosses threatening us with poor performance appraisal.

It is also very important to protect wealth when approaching financial independence in the event of severe market correction, hence it is prudent for me to review the allocation between fixed and variable wealth. I will raise the fixed wealth portion to above 50% by year end.

News on Keppel Corp

25-June-2007

Keppel secures rig contracts worth US$534 million
Rigs to be built to Keppel FELS’s proprietary KFELS N Class jackup and SSDT 3600E semisubmersible drilling tender designs.

Keppel FELS Limited (Keppel FELS), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Keppel Corporation Limited, has secured two rig contracts amounting to US$534 million (approximately S$820 million).

The contracts are for the construction of a drilling-cum-production jackup rig and a deepwater drilling tender rig. Both rigs will be built to Keppel’s proprietary design.

The first contract, worth US$400 million, is for the third KFELS N Class jackup rig for Skeie Drilling and Production, a member of the Skeie Group.

The contract is subject to certain conditions being met by 9 July 2007.

The new rig is expected to be delivered in the fourth quarter of 2010.

Said Mr Choo Chiau Beng, Chairman & CEO of Keppel Offshore & Marine (Keppel O&M), parent company of Keppel FELS, “Having three KFELS N Class orders in less than half a year is strong endorsement for this innovative design. It reinforces our confidence that the rig has what it takes to meet market requirements for highly robust rigs in the North Sea type of conditions.”

Developed by Keppel O&M’s R&D arm, Offshore Technology Development, the KFELS N Class jackup rig will provide customers the flexibility of having a unit that can undertake drilling and production activities concurrently. Capable of operating in water depths of up to 430 feet and drilling depths of down to 35,000 feet, the rig will have features to readily accept process modules for production activities. The design is in full compliance with the demanding and technically challenging requirements of rigs operating in the Norwegian sector of the North Sea.

The second contract is from repeat customer Seadrill Asia Limited (Seadrill Asia) for a semisubmersible drilling tender (SSDT) at US$134 million.

Slated for delivery at end 2009, the drilling tender will be built to Keppel FELS’s proprietary design, the KFELS SSDT™ 3600E.

Mr Choo added, “We are glad to continue our support of Seadrill in meeting their drilling requirements by delivering quality products on time and within budget. It is our aim to be the service provider of choice for our customers through innovation, engineering and excellent execution of projects.”

This new tender rig will be an enhancement of the last two KFELS SSDT™ 3600 design rigs, West Setia and West Berani, which Keppel FELS built for Seadrill Asia. The enhanced version includes modifications such as increased crane load capacity to 250 tonnes, four mud pumps and accommodation and services for 160 personnel.

The Keppel O&M group has built a total of five tender drilling rigs for Seadrill Asia, formerly Smedvig, since 1994. All the five rigs are gainfully deployed across the world. The first rig, West Pelaut, was voted ‘Shell Platform Rig of the year’ in 2006 for consistent long term performance. The last rig, West Berani, was successfully put into operation in Kuantan, East Malaysia, immediately after its delivery in December 2006.

Seadrill Asia’s parent company, Seadrill Limited, has also ordered four jackup rigs with Keppel FELS, of which three are currently under construction. The first of the four, West Ceres (ex Seadrill 3), was delivered on time and within budget in 2006.

The KFELS SSDT™ series is developed by Keppel O&M’s R&D arm, Deepwater Technology Group. A conventional drilling tender can only be deployed next to fixed platforms, but the KFELS SSDT™ series, with their enhanced capabilities, can operate in deepwaters up to 5,000ft alongside Spars and Tension Leg Platforms.

Keppel FELS is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Keppel Corporation Limited, through Keppel O&M, a leader in offshore rigs, shiprepair and conversion and specialised shipbuilding. Keppel O&M's near market, near customer strategy is bolstered by a global network of 20 yards in the Asia Pacific, Gulf of Mexico, Brazil, the Caspian Sea, Middle East and the North Sea regions. Integrating the experience and expertise of its yards worldwide, the group aims to be the provider of choice and partner in solutions for the offshore and marine industry.

The contracts are not expected to have any material impact on the net tangible assets or earnings per share of Keppel Corporation Limited for the financial year ending 31 December 2007.

Fixed Deposit vs ROC from active Stock Investing

For many years, I have been risk averse by putting money into Fixed Deposit, and guess what happened? Low return!

Only in 2003 that I realised that I have to take more risks through active stock investing if I want to reach financial independence.

Here is the comparsion between the performance of FD vs ROC through active stock investing

Historical STI High - Low

Knowing the historical STI High-Low will help me to understand the type of risks that I might be facing when STI corrects in due time, and what is the possible time frame that I might be in before I could recover my losses or have a cut losses strategy in place now

The Goal of the End Game - Financial Independence

The goal of the End Game is to accumulate enough wealth for you and your family to stop.
Stop putting your wealth at risk. Stop the gambling and risk taking with investments of any kind.

You would finally have enough money and personal power to walk away from the investing game and spend the rest of your life doing something else!

When exactly do you reach the End Game?

When you have enough principal invested safely for your after tax-income to match or exceed your annual expenses on an ongoing basis. This would include budgeting for the lifestyle you truly want.
