Why Set Goals???

This is something Grasshoppers will not become as they don't have goals. Wrong?

"What you get by achieving your goals is not as important as what you become by achieving your goals." - Henry David Thoreau

Is that the reason why more younger ones are openly stating FIRE as their financial goals?

Keppel subsidiary OMS bags 15-year contract for seabed exploration

By
KEPPEL Corporation's majority owned company Ocean Mineral Singapore (OMS) has bagged a 15-year contract for seabed exploration within the Clarion-Clipperton Fracture Zone of the Pacific Ocean with the International Seabed Authority (ISA).

OMS, sponsored by the Singapore government, is the first Singaporean company to be awarded an exploration contract for polymetallic nodules, said the company in a statement on Tuesday.
This follows the approval of OMS' application for the exploration licence for polymetallic nodules by the ISA on July 21, 2014.

Said OMS director Ong Ye Kung: "We are encouraged by reaching another milestone in our journey to find a more sustainable way of supporting the world's need for metal resources. In addition, we look forward to working closely with the ISA and other stakeholders to develop an environmentally responsible and commercially viable solution."

Polymetallic nodules - which contain copper, nickel, cobalt and manganese, and rare earth minerals - have the potential of supplying these key metals to meet growing global demand in applications such as construction, aerospace and alternative energy, said OMS.

Supported by the Keppel-NUS Corporate Laboratory, OMS will be conducting environmental studies and surveys for deposits of polymetallic nodules within the approved area of 58,000 sq km, which is approximately 80 times the size of Singapore, added the company.

Many CPF investors get their fingers burnt!

Only 15% made profits larger than 2.5% and 40% made losses: Report.

In the financial year ended Sept 30 last year (2014), 902,300 investors sold their CPFIS investment.

CW8888: 361K CPF members lost their hard earned saving!

Investing stocks as advertised in the newspapers, social media, blogs, and forums look and talk so easy.

Yesterday Uncle8888 read the best BS so far in the investment and finance blogging sphere; from $30K to $1M in 5 years; it can be as easy as 30-20-20 rule. LOL!

SMOL: Trust But Verify???

Trust? We can!

Verify? Not really! We can't really verify it is not fake or fraud. We can't!

In those days, Uncle8888 loved to poke (In Guru's un-moderated comment box in his blog. Every word went out live!) this late Guru who said he has made millions from the stock market by asking him to produce audited statements that he really made millions from the stock market or from his business

Since he had already made many millions, he could easily afford to pay for audited statement to prove it. Right? That was Uncle8888's argument every time when Guru reminded people that he made millions from the stock market. Uncle8888 would go into his comment box and poked him to do it. (Now, you can understand why some bloggers have changed to moderated comment box; but they initially started off as un-moderated comment box. They tio poked until they cannot tahan?)

"Gurus" are gurus. They are not stupid. They are very good at words, sweet talking, clever marketing and counter objections; otherwise they should have long gone.

Like those Snake Oil men in the past; if we kept seeing the same bunch of snake oil men at every Chinese Wayang Show that meant they have became successful businessmen selling some snake oil to willing buyers. Right?

This was how late Guru would counter back and Uncle8888 learned something from him.

Trust; but You can't really verify!

Late Guru's counter argument.

We trust audited statements from the Big Four. Right?

But it doesn't mean auditors have verified there is no uncovered fakes or fraud! We have seen some audited and listed companies have been faking or fraud so well until one day they were uncovered and start failing.

Trust is far more important than audited statements?

Trust! That is all you need to do. Soon easy money will come to your pocket. Trust me! I am here to help you. Why? Because I have made millions!

Our human weakness is that we will tend to trust more when it sounds so easy, so sweet and so promising; and especially when these came from the mouth of millionaires or from someone who are appearing so rich!

They are so rich so they can't be bluffing us!

Why not? Just try!

BTW, any difference between Greed and Trust?

What say you?

Who Says We Have No Contriol In The Stock Market???

We do have some indirect control in the stock market through our assets allocation to meet our current and near term liquidity need and to avoid selling our assets at market low through our portfolio management.

Even with an old heart, Uncle8888 should be able to take and live without depression over a few percentage points of volatility in his net worth but not something in the magnitude of 30% to 40% drop.

This type of drop can cause depression. Better don't try!

When we are older; asset allocations and portfolio management is becoming very critical as we definitely want to avoid any severe shock with our financial affairs.

Losing back paper losses of single digit loss to Mr. Market should be tolerable. Right?

How Much Is Enough For Retiring Couples in 2014???

Based on this news ...

MEDIAN household income from work in Singapore increased in nominal and real terms in 2014, according to a report released on Monday by the Department of Statistics.

Among resident employed households, median monthly household income from work rose from S$7,870 in 2013 to S$8,290 last year, a 5.3 per cent increase in nominal terms, or 4.1 per cent increase in real terms.

Taking household size into account, median monthly household income from work per household member rose by 5.9 per cent in nominal terms, or 4.7 per cent in real terms in 2014.

Median household income in 2014 is $8.3K

$5K to $6K of passive income (60% to 72% of $8.3K) should be good enough for any retiring couples at 2014 dollar value to live comfortably without housing loan and without children education expenses to support. But, they must have enough medical insurance coverage, at least one year worth of emergency fund to meet any sudden liquidity needs and another few years worth holding in short-term fixed income assets.

It is about assets allocation to meet sudden and unexpected short-term draw-down without suffering large losses. It is extremely hard for retirees to recover from any large losses.

When we are not sure how to live; take the middle path. It is unlikely to be too wrong!

Does Frugality Work In Medical Insurance Coverage?

Read? Does Frugality Work In Investing???

It is rather strange!

How come some frugal people are willing to pay more for costly medical insurance coverage for treatment at private hospitals?

Only when the prospect of dying is nearer then they will treat themselves better?

So frugality doesn't apply to medical treatment?

The Three Matters On Personal Finance: Saving, Insurance, and Investment!!!

No matters how.

For insurance matters, we always like to think we are right at the start and along the way; but it is only near to our grave or already has one leg in our coffin then we will know we are about right or far off from being right.

How about insurance?

Technically; it is about protection of assets and to cover liabilities i.e. why we pay premiums. But, emotionally, we use LIFE insurance to cover liabilities.

Why? Emotion!!! We are sold emotionally on the need to protect liabilities and cheapness to do so.

Over the years Uncle8888 has no LIFE insurance coverage for his three children and his stay-at-home-wife. They are liabilities. They are not assets to be protected.

After Mar 2016; Uncle8888 will have no more LIFE insurance protection. When he was at his 30s; he has already thought out carefully and knew very well that his human asset at 60 will become too expensive to be protected and his three children should be able to be on their own. His stay-at-home-wife can retire from home and goes back to work if necessary. Life of an ant is like that. Think too much and plan too far ahead.

After Mar 2016, he will self-insure from his own fund consisting

1. $XX,XXX  for emergency medical and health care
2. Medi-Shield Life (self funding from the yearly interests from MA)
3. MA
4. SA
5. RA

Why maintaining cash for medical needs?

Uncle8888 has never voluntarily touch his MA since day one as it is 4% CAGR. He is interest-wise man!

By now, he is already sitting inside his coffin. He knows he is about right on life insurance matters and not emotionally right.

DBS aims for S$100b in private banking assets in less than 3 years

SINGAPORE, June 9 (Reuters): Singapore's DBS Group Holdings DBSM.SI is aiming for a 40 percent jump in its private banking assets to $100 billion in less than three years, fueled by the growth of millionaires in the Greater China region and in its home market.

DBS's group head of wealth management, Tan Su Shan, said Singapore's biggest lender is generating strong asset growth in its home market, where there are more than 100,000 millionaires, and in China, where sectors such as technology and real estate are adding to the millionaire population.

"For both onshore and offshore in China, we're seeing very good, double-digit growth," Tan told the Reuters Wealth Management Summit on Tuesday.

"China now wants to do wealth management in a big way. The speed of change, the recognition that the RMB (renminbi) is an international currency, the wide use of the RMB, the opening up of the capital account, the flow of North-South-South North, to me it's all very exciting and it represents what is the single biggest trend for us in Asia," she said.

DBS bought Societe Generale's SOGN.PA Asian private bank last year, helping boost the ranking of the Singapore lender to Asia's seventh biggest private bank. DBS manages S$96 billion ($71 billion) at its private bank.

DBS and the private banking arm of rival Oversea-Chinese Banking Corp OCBC.SI are jostling for market share in a highly competitive wealth management market in Asia, led by global players such as UBS UBSG.VX and Citigroup C.N.

In China, Tan said DBS is looking at alliances and partnerships with companies in the technology space, travel companies, luxury retailers - tie-ups which will help DBS get a better foothold in the market.

"In the wealth management space onshore, an ideal partner would be someone who is already looking after the targeted clients, who may want to then have a good bank that's able to do part of the infrastructure for them," she said.

DBS is gaining market share in Singapore, Tan said, without giving details. To win market share in places such as China and Indonesia, data mining is key to get a better insight about what customers want, she said.

"The old style of wealth management and sales - create the product, get the relationship manager to sell, sell sell - doesn't work anymore," said Tan, who has previously worked for Morgan Stanley MS.N and Citigroup.

Your Millionaire Dream In Singapore? Depending On Who You Ask???

Your Millionaire Dream in Singapore. How?

Be lucky? Don't get yourself involved with wealth destruction activities e.g let your wife becoming Stay-At-Home-Mum and having more children.

It is no doubt that Stay-At-Home-Mum and children will eat money and destroy wealth.

Yes. We will destroy wealth by doing that. But; it doesn't mean we cannot rebuild it stronger. It just made it harder and longer for us to do it. It is not impossible!!!

Quite sure. There are HDB heartland millionaires who are married with children who are eating hard into their money.

Frugality On Our Daily Food or Meals??? (2)

Read? Frugality On Our Daily Food or Meals???

Hey! Are you Teochew?

This morning ...

Got new stall?

Okay lah. Give new business owner a chance to survive.

So Uncle8888 has his bak chang breakfast at new Nonya Kueh and Bak Chang stall near Kovan coffeeshop where the famous Teochew fish soup stall is located.

Hmm..

Nonya bak chang $3.60 and Teochew bak chang ( 潮州双拼肉粽) $4.00

See the difference between the two type of  bak chang

Nyonya Bak Chang Recipe (娘惹粽 Rice Dumplings)

Filling Ingredients

Fatty Pork and Dried Shiitake Mushrooms

Teochew bak chang ( 潮州双拼肉粽)

Filling Ingredients

Pork leg meat 前腿肉, chestnuts 栗子, Chinese mushrooms 香菇, dried shrimps 虾米, dried scallops 瑶柱, dried oysters 耗干, salted eggs 咸蛋, ginger 姜, garlic 蒜, shallot 葱头 and red bean paste 红豆沙. Teochews include red bean paste into dumplings to give a balance of sweet and salty taste and this type of the dumplings is called 双拼 or 2 flavours.

So Uncle8888 being a Teochew; he ordered Teochew bak chang and paid $0.40 more.

So being Teochew. Not frugal?

Now, look at steam fish cooking style ....

Hong Kong style steam fish

Teochew style steam fish

Walau!

Why add in more ingredients to steam a fish and add more costs?

So being Teochew. Not frugal?

Can't Really Trust Mr. Market For Enough Money???

... may just be one stock market crash away ....

CW8888:

Absolutely, Uncle8888 knows it too well as he is updating his investment portfolio on daily basis. Letting Mr. Market evaluating our wealth is an illusion of being wealthy as he may just be one stock market crash away.

So how?

Does Frugality Work In Investing???

It is the lowest stock price among its peers. We have calculated the our self-derived intrinsic value of double digits margin of safety.

Hoot?

For things, we consume or use. Frugality doesn't harm us.

Apply frugality to investing. Good luck!

Mr. Market does care what is frugality.

Lowest can be lower.

Double digits margin of safety can approach infinity!

Why Blue Chips? Depending Who You Ask???

Why Blue Chips?

Uncle8888 has tried simi lansai chips.

In the end, his blue chips bought during market low are the ones still standing tall as his Money Trees.

Why blue chips?

You have ready-made watch-list of blue chips. You can easily chart STI. You can read newspaper headlines to know when it is about good time for you to start looking at these blue chips.

Sound not too difficult. Right? Less Analyzing. More Investing - CW8888

Of course, some blue chips may turn into black chips.

So what?

In investing, losing some money is part of the Game. You scare to lose your money; then don't play this Game. We just need to win more than we lose; we should be alright over long run.

Uncle8888 has his multi-baggers, his two ZERO baggers and his lousy blue-black chips to prove this theory of Investing. Losing is part of the Game!
