29 December 2...

By Steve Marshall and news reports

29 December 2013 11:41 GMT

A newbuild rig under construction for BP’s Quad 204 project West of Shetland sank at a South Korean yard on Saturday morning after taking in water.

The semi-submersible Deepsea Aberdeen, contracted by Norwegian driller Odfjell Drilling, was now "stabilised on the the seabed with a draft at around 21 metres" after taking in water in one of its pontoons while docked at Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME), Odfjell confirmed in a statement issued on Sunday.

There were 38 workers, including six Norwegians, employed by equipment supplier National Oilwell Varco (NOV) onboard the rig at the time of the sinking, according to Norwegian state TV channel NRK.

However, Odfjell stated that all personnel were immediately evacuated and no injuries were reported.

NOV managing director for Norway, Tor Henning Ramfjord, was quoted as saying: “None of the employees with NOV have suffered physical injury and all of them are safe.”

The sinking is reported to have occurred as installation of rig equipment was due to start by NOV, but Ramfjord said: “We know that our equipment is not to blame for the accident. This is something for which the yard has to take responsibility.”

He added the GVA 7500-design harsh-environment rig was not submerged beneath the water.

Odfjell said it was awaiting more information from the yard on the incident.

There were unconfirmed reports that the rig had been refloated.

A DSME spokesman was reported by Reuters to have described the accident as minor. He said the rig had tilted slightly due to a problem with a drainpipe at the bottom, which was being repaired.

The rig, ordered by Oslo-listed Odfjell at a reported cost of $626 million, was due to be delivered in May 2014 ready to start work for BP on the Schiehallion and Loyal fields off the UK as part of the British supermajor’s prestigious Quad 204 redevelopment project.

The Norwegian rig contractor has a seven-year contract with BP for the rig worth $1.2 billion - the largest-ever award for the company when it was made in 2012 - with the unit due to start work in the fourth quarter of next year.

Odfjell also has three additional one-year extension options for the rig.

Odfjell spokesman Gisle Johansen told NRK the company was still assessing the financial consequences of the incident but added: “In terms of legal accountability, the yard must be held responsible.”
Createwealth8888https://www.blogger.com/profile/08563834016250153049noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1602023866179666640.post-90121338966034976102013-12-27T21:38:12.763+08:002013-12-27T21:38:12.763+08:00The rigbuilder said this is the most number of new...The rigbuilder said this is the most number of new rigs any shipyard has built in a year.

Keppel's previous record was 13 new rigs in 2009.

It said that this year's record would be hard to beat.

Seven rigs will be delivered next year and another 16 in 2015.

Wong Kok Seng, managing director (offshore) of Keppel Offshore & Marine, said: "In 2014, the market still looks very buoyant. But in my opinion, it is unlikely to deliver 21 rigs."

Keppel FELS sees demand for rigs from Mexico, Vietnam and India. There is also growing interest from the UK for drilling in the North Sea.

- CNA/ms

Createwealth8888https://www.blogger.com/profile/08563834016250153049noreply@blogger.com
